For the movie lovers among you, a trip to Universal Studios is a must. It is 22 miles from Davenport, and it takes 30 minutes to drive there. Your favourite movies are here transformed into thrilling rides. Special lands and attractions throughout the park cater to both the younger and the older sets. Older children and teenagers love scary stuff, and Universal capitalizes on that, however there are also lots of pre-school favourites as well. The whole family will thoroughly enjoy strolling through the set streets, and of course there is plenty of shopping to be had.
Only 20 minutes' drive will take you to Seaworld Orlando. Do you like fish? You can see dolphins, manatees, whales and even sharks - there are many different recreated habitats, touch tanks, aquariums and exhibits. "Wild Arctic", for example, even has a thrill ride! Or you could make a dream come true and swim with dolphins - in Discovery Cove. This is another park where your whole family could spend all day. However, it's not 'just' a theme park - there is also The Waterfront, which has an excellent collection of restaurants, entertainment and shops.
Swim with a bottlenose dolphin at Discovery Cove. Explore the coral reefs and grottos among thousands of rays and exotic fish. Discovery Cove is a very special place and visitors are limited to one thousand per day.
Only 90 minutes' drive will take you to Busch Gardens. This family adventure park was recently voted the most popular theme park in Florida among residents of the Tampa Bay area. Alongside rides, live shows, restaurants, shops and games, all with an exotic and fascinating African theme, is one of the country's premier zoos which has more than 2,700 animals. Busch Gardens offers a truly exciting day out for your whole family.
There certainly is something for everyone. If you're into, for example, reptiles - Gatorland is where you will find a "swamp stompin' adventure"! Plenty of alligators, snakes and other slithery things. There are tours, shows and adventures for everyone, from the youngest to the oldest. The park has some 125 adult alligators in a 10 acre marsh; you can have an airboat tour during the day (including lunch), or a night-time 'gator-spotting tour', and even an Alligator Wrestlin' show!
Apollo 11 blasted off from Kennedy Space Center to take Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins to the moon at 09.37 am on July 16th 1969. Kennedy Space Center is a working NASA facility and launches still take place every month. But it's also much more than that. Take the opportunity to see the facility on one of several excellent tours offered. Or train like an astronaut on the day long Astronaut Training Experience. Time your visit to see a launch firsthand. See the Saturn V rockets that launched the early astronauts into orbit at the Apollo/Saturn V Center.
It can't all be fun, can it? Well, what about some educational stuff. There's the Orlando Science Center - disguising education as entertainment! There are creative, hands-on science experiments to be done, lasers, magnets, exhibits exploring the human body, programs, displays and interactive exhibits. There's everything from dinosaur fossils to electricity and engineering. If you fancy some astronomy there's the Crosby Observatory, where you can look into Florida's most powerful publicly accessible refractor telescope.
Cypress Gardens, Winter Haven - This was the state's original theme park. Daily water ski shows, magic shows and a collection of some famous and historical air vessels dating back to the origins of flight.
Not far away from Davenport, in Polk County, is Bok Tower Gardens and Sanctuary, Lake Wales. This is the highest point in the Florida peninsula and is landmarked by the striking architecture of the Bok bell tower, a gift given to the state in 1929 by publisher and editor Edward Bok. Surrounding the tower is a historical centre and a beautiful 128-acre botanical garden.
